What is "Osteostimulation"?

 Through both physical and chemical interactions, NovaBone Putty not only acts as a scaffold but is also actively involved in signaling, recruiting, proliferating and differentiating osteoblasts to the defect site. In vivo studies have demonstrated that this osteostimulative property results in stimulation and acceleration of new bone formation in an osseous defect.

Osteostimulation vs. Osteoconduction

Synthetic bone graft materials are typically defined as osteoconductive. Simply put, osteoconductive means that a material acts only as a scaffold on which bone cells can migrate and proliferate. The common histological observation would be bone growth beginning at outer surfaces of the defect, and extending gradually inward over time, toward the center of the defect. Osteostimulative, by contrast means that the material supports a higher level of osteoblast expression and activity than seen with materials that are merely osteoconductive. The corresponding histological observation is bone growth in a grafted defect occurring not just at the margins, but throughout the site concurrently. It is also seen as bone in-growth into individual graft particles resulting in faster resorption of particles and of course rapid bone regeneration.

Examples of osteoconductive materials include: HA, Bio-Oss, β-TCP, Bioplant-HTR, etc

Osteostimulation vs. Osteoinduction

The term osteoinductive is used to describe materials that express a high level of osteoblast activity in a graft defect . However, osteoinductive materials are capable of inducing bone growth and stimulating osteoblast activity in the absence of host bone. As an example, if an osteoinductive material were to be injected into a muscle or an eye, the resultant area would calcify into bone. Examples of materials that demonstrate osteoinductivity include: Bone morphogenic proteins (BMP), Growth factors, etc.
